What
happens when the lake freezes or the boats are not in service ?
In the event of a ferry break down the school will
be taking a school bus located at the foot of Bay and Queen’s
Quay. The bus will drive to Bathurst and Queens Quay and board onto
the island airport ferryboat. Please keep in mind that ferry boat
breakdowns are not in our control
What formal
training does the staff have?
The staff at Gibraltar Point Day Nursery (GPDN)
consists of 2 qualified Early Childhood Educators and 1 qualified
Early Childhood Assistant.
How do the
children travel from ferry boat to the school?
Upon arriving at Island the children board onto
a school bus and take a 7 minute ride to the school located on the
south west side of the Centre Island beaches.
What dates does the centre close?
Gibraltar Point Day Nursery (GPDN) closes all statutory
holidays, 2 weeks in December and in August. Also note the centre
operates for 4 weeks in July only.
What happens
if my child is ill and has to go home?
If your child becomes ill during the day a staff
member will contact you to make arrangements for you to pick up
your child. It is the parent’s responsibility to travel to
the Island. Staff cannot escort children back and forth from the
Island to city in the middle of a program day.
How often
does the Centre have fundraising events?
We have two major fundraising events during the
school year. There is the annual Christmas Boutique held at the
Algonquin Island Association (AIA) on the island and a second event
usually held during the year. Fundraisings consist of: selling children’s
art, raffle baskets, silent auctions, and bake sales.
How does the
staff handle separation anxiety?
The staff at GPDN are well trained professionals
and ready to deal with situations such as separation anxiety. Staff
are aware on the anxieties young children and parents experience
during this time. We offer newsletters with tips on how parents
can
understand and cope with separation anxiety.
What types of communication tools are
used to correspond with parents?
Parent communication is very important. Because
of the nature of our location we have developed a tools to ensure
that ongoing communication is consistent. Parents are encouraged
to communicate through the “communication book” that
children carry in
their back packs daily. Parents are also encourage to call by phone,
and visits to the centre. Daily oral communication is also provided
by staff upon during pick up time.
Monthly newsletters also distributed.
How often
do children spend outdoors in the winter?
Outdoor time is vital part of our program. Day Nursery’s
Act states that children spend a minimum of 1 our per day outdoors.
However, if a weather warning is issued children use the school
gymnasium.
If my child
misses a day can he/she attend another day in lieu of the sick day?
We do not offer lieu days.
